"I enjoy being able to see pictures in a raw piece of material and then bring it to life. I get satisfaction when others get joy from the work I do"

Processes of Carving

Ponga

When I am carving ponga I can use the piece to guide me when I look at the shape and the pictures that emerge. I then draw with chalk the outlines of what I will carve before starting.

Sandstone

When carving sandstone I draw with crayon, then may block out with grinders before chipping by hand with hammer and chisels. I finish off with rasps and sandpaper.

Hardstone

Working with hardstone requires several different grinders, diamond cutting wheels, diamond grinding and sanding discs. I also use drills and dremels and polishing pads with diamonds. This all takes time but gives a stunning and long lasting result.
